Please don’t come

“More tourism, more deterioration. More visitors, more loss,” said Susana Nahoe, an archaeologist who was a liaison between Chile’s National Tourism Service and the island’s scientific community before leaving the post two years ago, citing “differences in values.”

“We are at the point now where, either we protect what we have or we lose it,” she said.

According to this report, record tourism may be harmful to Easter Island.

Just a matte! Chotto minute! Hold on a tic…

According to this report, our personality shifts as we switch languages.

Interesting idea.  But how much of  that  relates to the cultural mores and definitions of how people relate to one another? Learning a language can teach you A-ha there is more than one way to think. And that is because you have to form sentences and concepts in wholly different ways than you are accustomed to. Suddenly it is the construction of the thought that you have to learn to tinker with again, from scratch and at first this can be a very clunky and rigid affair.  It is kind of like having to learn how to walk, you forget the complexity of it all until the ability has been taken away.

I don’t mean memorizing patterns for verb conjugations. Think about diagramming a sentence. Then take that model and do it in a different language. The rules change completely.  So too, do our mannerisms because how else can you empathize and assimilate if you don’t show the courtesy of a mirrored response?

What would Jesus do

It can’t hurt to ask a question, can it?

Silvio Berlusconi wanted to  know when the church is planning to change the rules about divorced and remarried persons being able to receive Holy Communion according to this BBC report.

A rather different tactic than Rudy Guiliani who made his own decision about the appropriateness of the matter much to the shock and dismay of many clergy in New York.

Expressive?

June 25th, 2008 · Older Essays

Today Bill Clinton endorsed Barack Obama. What struck me was the expression on his face was eerily similar to Eliot  Spitzer ‘s  when he gave his resignation speech. Lips tucked in and turned up. Like a little boy who is loathe to admit he has done something wrong, the damage is irreparable and no checkbook, charm, or chummies can make this not so.

Perhaps Mr Clinton regrets the inconvenience of reality in lieu of the fairy tale?
